Aut Inveniam Aut Faciam

This phrase, loosely translated, means “I shall either find a way or make one.” It is a phrase that reflects a fierce determination – the kind of determination we all need when the path forward seems all but impossible.

These famous words were allegedly uttered by none other than Hannibal as he and his troops seemed helplessly pinned at the edge of the Alps during their conquest of Europe.

According to Wikipedia, the phrase was also adopted by Francis Bacon and Robert Peary as their personal motto and it is also apparently quite popular in social, educational, and military organizations.

As you will see – should you choose to follow my reflections here – this phrase is also very, very meaningful to me. It is also somewhat reflective of my life journey. This phrase, to me at least, is the ancient equivalent of the well-known 21st-century phrase “hold my beer!”

I chose this motto because the one consistent theme in my life is that I have had to repeatedly overcome what many (including myself often) thought were insurmountable odds.

Somehow the challenge of overcoming seemingly insurmountable odds was the very motivation I needed to first survive and then, ultimately, to thrive. I honestly do not understand why I am like that.
